About the Blog
New commentary entries to jw’s job blog are posted weekly. Occasionally, read: when the spirit moves or earth shattering news – like a job interview or something equally important – might cause me to post more often and less formally. Feel free to leave me suggestions for topics you’d like to see covered by sending email to jw [at] jwjobblog [dot] com. I’ve also started a Twitter feed (see the right column on the homepage) to keep folks current with the numerous networking opportunities, events and articles of interest. You can follow these @jwjobblog on Twitter.
I’m an IT professional who has a passion for information – finding it, sharing it, securing it, and managing it. I spent much of my career at Oxford University Press keeping the IT wheels rolling, managing groups in Service Delivery, Technical Support, Network Operations, Internet Security, and Online Business Services. At OUP, I was responsible for many technical innovations, including connecting OUP to the Internet in 1992, and oversight of the development, launch, and growth of the US web presence beginning in 1996.
In 2007 I joined CynergisTek, an IT security and risk management group based in Austin, Texas, as a Senior Security Analyst and Consultant. I hold (and keep current) CISA and CGEIT certifications. I was laid off from CynergisTek in late summer in 2009.
In between, I’ve owned, built and sold a profitable gourmet specialty bakery business.
When it comes to my job search I have jumped in with both feet, becoming a SME in triangle area job search groups, tools, and resources. I figure if I’m going to collect all this information, I should share it with others, which is how this blog came about. When not out networking, you will probably find me at home or some nearby wi-fi hotspot, scouring online jobs search resources for my next career opportunity.
I work as a Community Facilitator for #HireFriday a movement on Twitter designed to help people find jobs — currently, I am working on pulling their various media streams (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and blog) together to provide a unified message and increase brand awareness.
I enjoy writing and author the Job Technology Review Column for Classroom to Cubicle, an online magazine aimed at graduating college and university seniors and recent grads. I also edit blog entries for Checklist 2.0, a website dedicated to IT Audit Best Practices. Of late, I have been helping coach people on LinkedIn and speaking to local groups regarding the web and social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) on topics ranging from job search strategies to net etiquette. I also provide technical consulting for people and small businesses related to online presence and website development. And have been known to QA websites for startups.
Unfortunately, none of these efforts come with a paycheck.
My career focus now is on finding a position where I can leverage my talent, knowledge and skills in IT Management, Audit, Security, and Governance with my interest and experience in Internet, Social Media and Web.
I’m is active in a number of animal and human welfare organizations and groups. I am working with the Triangle Networking Group as their Information Management Director, helping them shape the new vision for their organization. I volunteer with the local ISACA Chapter with their CISA Review Course, and work with the North Carolina Tech4Good annual conference. I am the president for the recently formed non-profit, North Carolina Greyhound Adoption Promotion. I make my home in Durham with my faithful greyhounds Crumpet and Nutmeg. Don’t ask me about greyhounds or you may find yourself adopting one. After all, they may just be the perfect dog.
Oh yeah — hire me, I make a terrific employee!
